Photo of the Week is back! I was up in Maine for February vacation this past week and went out of my way to see this covered bridge. Covered bridges are beautiful wooden constructions built primarily in the 19th century as a way to protect the bridges from weather conditions that would destroy them in just a few years. By covering the bridge, the load-bearing structures were protected from snow, ice and rain and lasted much longer than uncovered bridges.
An interesting picture to show your students - get them to figure out why these exist and why they are found only in northern states of New England...
